David Fifita, a forward for South Sydney, is determined to honor his father's memory as he makes his return to the NRL finals this season.
In 2018, Fifita debuted under coach Wayne Bennett at Brisbane but faced challenges in recent seasons, including three ankle surgeries affecting his time with the Titans.
After the loss of his father, Siaosi, in September, he sought a fresh start with the Rabbitohs and a reconnection with Bennett.
"I do everything for Dad, and I know he's looking down on me, and I hope I'm making him and my mum proud," Fifita shared.
He emphasized his close relationship with his father, recalling cherished memories and expressing gratitude for Bennett's support during tough times. "It was a tough time when he left," he said, reflecting on his journey.
Fifita acknowledges the skepticism surrounding his potential but insists that few understand the struggles he has battled.
"I've had those dark days with my injuries - people thought I was done," he noted, emphasizing Bennett's confidence in him as instrumental to his recovery.
He looks forward to proving himself in the elimination final against the Newcastle Knights, ready to unleash his trademark powerful runs.
Teammate Cody Walker highlighted the positive environment at Souths, expressing respect for Fifita's contributions. "He's well-liked and we love having him part of the group," Walker stated.
Despite a hamstring injury sidelining him for six weeks earlier this season, Fifita has scored six tries in 11 games since his return in Round 14.
He remarked, "Just enjoying my footy, mate. I'm coming to work with a smile," reflecting the supportive atmosphere among teammates and coaches.
After overcoming significant adversity, he has regained his confidence and looks toward a brighter future on the field.
