Josh Papali'i Balances Family Commitment With Retirement Decision

Canberra Raiders front-rower Josh Papali'i has disclosed that he had reservations about relocating his family overseas when contemplating a new contract following his retirement from professional league.

Papali'i officially announced his retirement on Monday, with fans gathering at GIO Stadium this weekend to honor the celebrated player.

This weekend, the 34-year-old will participate in his 341st NRL match, playing for the Green Machine against the Brisbane Broncos on Friday. Throughout his career, he has represented Queensland, Australia, and Samoa at the highest levels.

Although rumors circulated about Papali'i transitioning to the Super League post-season, he played a crucial role in securing the Raiders their 2025 minor premiership. He was even recalled by Billy Slater for Queensland's State of Origin Game 3 decider.

His recent performances suggested that he had the potential to continue playing in either the NRL or Super League if he chose to accept another offer. Despite considering a move to a Super League team, Papali'i prioritized his family's needs and decided against relocating overseas. "I was pretty keen to head overseas as well, but it just wasn't meant to be," he stated.

"I've got two other young sons at home ... just taking them to England would be tough. I'm definitely holding back the tears right now. This club means a lot to me."

Papali'i also confessed he was prepared to retire before the 2026 season began, but a conversation with coach Ricky Stuart led him to reconsider.

"I'm definitely ready. It's been on my mind for a few weeks now, a few months actually, a lot of sleepless nights just thinking whether I could keep going or not," said Papali'i alongside his children at a press conference.

"Funny story. On day one of pre-season, before I even started, I went to (coach Ricky Stuart's) office and said 'I quit'. Then he told me to just hang on and do one session."

Despite a rocky start, Papali'i has been performing well in 2026, making 11 appearances for the Raiders, although the club is poised to miss out on the Top 8.

Friday night will see GIO Stadium renamed 'Papa's House' as a large crowd turns out for the veteran's final home game.
