Joseph Suaalii's Chiefs Move Unlikely

The latest rumors surrounding code-hopping sensation Joseph Suaalii and the PNG Chiefs have been firmly dismissed.

Reports from News Corp earlier on Monday suggested Suaalii's camp was in discussions to join the Chiefs as one of their inaugural foundation players.

The Chiefs already secured signings from Jarome Luai and Alex Johnston and will likely wait until November 1 to finalize any additional acquisitions, as players with contracts ending in 2027 will then be free to negotiate with other teams.

Suaalii, capable of playing wing, centre, or fullback, is actively vying for a position on the Wallabies team for the Rugby World Cup but could make a return to the NRL as early as 2028.

In a post on social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), Weidler stated, "Report that Joseph Suaalii is in talks with PNG Chiefs is false. Have talked to Chiefs and management of Suaalii and they both said it's complete rubbish."

Notably, Weidler has past connections with Michael Chammas, who recently transitioned from media to become the general manager of football in Port Moresby.

The connection between Suaalii and the Chiefs is further highlighted by recent links to fellow code-hopper Joseph Manu, a former Sydney Rooster.

It's understood that the Roosters might try to create room for both Suaalii and Manu should they wish to return to the NRL.

Additionally, another Rooster, Connor Watson, is closely associated with the Chiefs, who are reportedly planning a recruitment effort targeting top talent from the Penrith Panthers as many of their elite players become available after 2027.
