Former Rugby League legend Andrew Johns has unleashed a scathing attack on his old squad for their handling of the Kalyn Ponga saga, throwing out a bold theory that could have prevented the whole mess.

Calling the Newcastle Knights management "incompetent," Johns criticized Ponga's decision to step down from playing for Australia during the Pacific Championships.

The 26-year-old's move has sparked outrage, with many calling for Ponga to be banned from representing his country ever again.

NRL chief Peter V'landys has also expressed his displeasure at the Queensland State of Origin star, hinting at the possibility of suspending Ponga from NRL games at the start of the 2025 season.

The league is currently looking into Ponga's controversial decision, which was made public through a statement from the Knights.

Ponga, managed by his father Andre, stated, "I want to win a comp, for me anything short of that, isn't success." This statement has only added fuel to the fire surrounding the situation.
