Newcastle's Crossland barred from trophy handover

Phoenix Crossland

On Monday, Nathan Cleary accepted Crossland's apology for the hip-drop tackle that left him needing emergency surgery the previous Sunday.

Cleary later asked social media users to stop abusing Crossland, stressing the tackle was accidental.

Crossland received a four-match ban Tuesday but remains with the Knights during grand-final week.

He was named at No. 9.

He can join dressing-room and pre-game warm-ups, but NRL rules keep him off the bench and in the players' enclosure.

After Sunday's grand final against the Sydney Roosters, he can enter the field to celebrate with teammates.

A Knights win lets him join trophy celebrations, but not the official presentation.

Coach Justin Holbrook retained him at No. 9, saying: "That was his jersey all year."

At Tuesday's judiciary hearing, a tearful Crossland said: "It's been the worst couple of days of my life."

He said: "He's my favourite player by a mile, and the only reason he's in hospital is because of me."
