Holmes joins Cook Islands for World Cup

Cook Islands thump Rhinos for last spot at Rugby League World Cup

After beating South Africa late last year, the Cook Islands became the final side to qualify for the Rugby League World Cup.

Valentine Holmes is in the squad for the first time and is likely to play fullback, though the wing is another option.

Co-captains KL Iro and Marata Niukore lead a balanced squad that includes several players recognised from the NRL.

The Aitu are not expected to make a major impact, but Karmichael Hunt's side could showcase emerging talent as it continues to improve.

In Group A, they play Fiji in Newcastle on October 18, New Zealand in Christchurch on October 25, and Australia in Townsville on October 31.

The squad includes Cameron Brown, Rhys Dakin, Glassie Glassie, Holmes, Esom Ioka, Iro, Chaev Kolone and Makahesi Makatoa.

Also selected are Esan Marsters, Amare Milford, Davvy Moale, K-CI Newton-Whare, Rua Ngatikaura, Niukore, Pride Petterson-Robati and Reuben Porter.

The remaining players are Reubenn Rennie, Brad Takairangi, Mason Teague, David Tuariki, Paul Ulberg, Delahia Wigmore and Maui Winitana-Patelesio.
