Lebanon select sidelined Parramatta back Alameddine

Lebanon begin their Rugby League World Cup campaign against Papua New Guinea in Port Moresby on October 17, followed by matches against Tonga and France.

Coach Michael Cheika has named 23 players, all drawn from NRL clubs or their feeder sides; none play in Lebanon's domestic competition.

Parramatta outside back Mohamed Alameddine has made the squad after missing most of the season. The 21-year-old trained away from the Eels' facility amid rising tensions in Sydney's gang wars and last played NSW Cup in June.

Alameddine has not been accused of wrongdoing. Parramatta sidelined him for his safety and that of his teammates.

The Cedars, quarter-finalists at the previous World Cup, will miss injured Wests Tigers playmaker Adam Doueihi and Mitchell Moses, who was selected by Australia.

Canterbury winger Jacob Kiraz is likely to play fullback. Eels centre Jordan Samrani, Tigers prop Alex Twal and Manly winger Jason Saab are also included.

Saab received an exemption to represent Lebanon despite having no Lebanese ancestry, using his adoptive stepfather's roots to qualify.

Future NSW State of Origin coach Matt King will assist Cheika. After the tournament, Cheika will leave his Sydney Roosters assistant role to become head coach of Super Rugby Pacific's NSW Waratahs.
