Australia's unteachable 1992 World Cup pass

Teddy versus Reece: The battle to be Australia’s World Cup No.1

Australia completed an unbeaten run through eight World Cup matches before earning the right to host the 1992 final.

The campaign had begun in 1989, with teams meeting home and away as part of regular international programmes. One Test in each three-match series counted towards the tournament.

The Australian Rugby League gave up hosting rights to Great Britain, mainly because Wembley Stadium could accommodate 80,000 spectators.

At Wembley, 73,631 fans watched Australia trail Great Britain before Kevin Walters came on, just days after turning 25.

Only one try was scored, and Walters created it with a pass that appeared simple. He will coach Australia at this year's event, but will not be able to teach his players that moment.

Among the Australian squad was 22-year-old Renouf, making his first overseas trip after winning the NSWRL grand final with Brisbane a week earlier.

The team also arrived with a plan to counter jet lag, an approach the article says would not be used today.
