Benji Marshall has won only 23 of 72 matches during his three seasons as Wests Tigers head coach.
Although Marshall is not under obvious pressure, the club's board may have little patience for another finals-free campaign in 2027.
The Tigers have advertised a 2027 assistant coaching position on LinkedIn, with more than 70 applicants reportedly applying.
The successful candidate would report to Marshall as the club attempts to rebuild after another disastrous season.
Former St George Illawarra Dragons and Cronulla Sharks coach Shane Flanagan has confirmed he is interested in the vacancy.
Flanagan, dismissed by the Dragons during the first half of 2025 after a poor start, told Triple M Radio he wants to return to coaching, but not necessarily as a head coach.
"I want to coach. I'm not worried about being a head coach, I've had my time there," Flanagan said.
"Whether it's an assistant coach or whether it's in the admin side of things, I want to be involved, I love rugby league. I have done it my whole life.
"I won a competition, played semi-finals, been in Origin, assistant coach for Australia and all that sort of stuff. I have some runs on the board."
Flanagan said Marshall needed support and highlighted the Tigers' young talent, including Samuela Fainu and fullback Bula.
