Riley Jones has gone from an overlooked 24-year-old to a Cronulla finals centre within four weeks.
His opportunity followed injuries to Jesse Ramien and Mawene Hiroti, plus Michael Gabrael's suspension.
Jones, who can also play hooker, had only one Newcastle appearance in 2023 before joining the Sharks last year.
His sudden rise could resemble Steven Bradbury's unlikely success, with Cronulla facing the Sydney Roosters for a place in the preliminary final.
Jones grew up on the Central Coast and credits Roosters NRLW coach John Strange with developing him at The Entrance.
"Johnny had a big influence on me, he's done a lot for me," Jones told AAP.
He has also attracted attention around the Sutherland Shire, despite being a four-handicap golfer unused to public recognition.
"Driving in the car and knowing I'm playing in an NRL final is pretty cool and something I'll never forget."
Jones said leaving Newcastle forced him from his comfort zone after he had lost enthusiasm for the game.
"I probably fell out of love for the game. I think I needed a change and was comfortable there," Jones said.
"I'm not sure why that happened but I'm obviously living out a dream right now."
