The competition for the services of Sydney Roosters playmaker Sandon Smith has intensified, with reports indicating interest from five clubs.
Initially, it seemed Smith was ready to finalize a deal with the Newcastle Knights, who had arranged a tour for him in the Hunter area this week. However, new information reveals that both the St George Illawarra Dragons and South Sydney Rabbitohs are also expressing interest in the player.
The Knights are considered frontrunners, aiming to find a partner for marquee recruit Dylan Brown in the halves next season.
The other clubs in pursuit include the Canberra Raiders and North Queensland Cowboys. The Raiders' intentions concerning Smith's role remain vague, particularly due to the strong performances of five-eighth Ethan Strange this year. Meanwhile, the Cowboys are actively searching for a long-term halves partner for Tom Dearden.
Additionally, clubs may view Smith as a utility option.
Despite escalating interest in him, Smith's manager, Gavin Orr, noted in an interview with Wide World of Sports' The Mole, that the Roosters have not yet granted him clearance to negotiate his next move, as he is still contracted with the club until 2026. Orr confirmed that five clubs have proactively sought updates on Smith's situation.
