Fiji has announced a 40-man squad for the 2026 World Cup, featuring several players with international experience, but notably omitting Mark Nawaqanitawase, who was initially considered for selection.
At the forefront of the squad are the Fainu brothers-Latu, Sione, and Samuela. Their participation remains uncertain due to eligibility issues.
Troy Grant, the Chairman of the International Rugby League (IRL), stated to Code Sports last month, "All three are eligible for Tonga and NZ but believe they have Fijian heritage that they wish to honour."
He added, "Unfortunately they've been unable to establish with accredited records from Fiji."
Grant noted, "IRL have no issues with their application or desire to represent Fiji as it's evident they have a genuine desire to play for Fiji and during heritage round recently flew both the Tongan and Fijian flags."
He also remarked, "The IRL has rigid eligibility criteria and have given them more time to provide credible documents to support their application."
It is believed the brothers can qualify through their grandmother, yet they have not submitted the necessary documentation to confirm their eligibility.
Additionally, Fiji confirmed Nawaqanitawase's absence; both Fiji and Australia expressed interest in him playing, but his commitments in rugby union and an expiring NRL contract rendered him unavailable for the event.
Apisai Koroisau will captain the side, and the Wests Tigers have the highest representation in the squad, including the Fainu brothers and Koroisau, alongside Jahream Bula, Sunia Turuva, Josese Lanyon, and Solomone Saukuru.
The backline features significant participation from the English Super League, with Waqa Blake, Maika Sivo, and Semi Valemei included, while Jacob Saifiti is set to lead the forwards but may miss the tournament's start due to a four-game suspension for a serious high tackle that resulted in his dismissal.
His absence will depend on how many games the Knights have remaining in their finals campaign.
