"Has come back a man": Todd Payten, Jake Clifford heap praise on 'confident' halfback after return

North Queensland Cowboys coach Todd Payten has showered praise on the returning Jake Clifford after a stellar performance led the team to a resounding victory over the Canberra Raiders in Townsville on Saturday evening.

Clifford was called up to replace the ousted Chad Townsend for the crucial showdown with the Raiders, and the new halfback certainly did not disappoint.

With two try assists and an impressive 197 metres gained on the field, Clifford played a key role in the commanding 42-4 triumph.

Payten commended Clifford's remarkable growth, saying, "I'm happy for the kid.

He left the club a few years back as a boy and he has returned as a man.

He had some maturing to do, but he has put in the hard work, and his positive attitude has shone throughout the season."

"The form shown by Clifford and Tom Duffy is a significant factor in why the QLD Cup team Northern Pride is leading the competition.

Clifford earned his spot in the team and capitalized on it with a standout performance tonight," Payten added in his post-match comments.
