The ARL Commission is on the hunt for a new Australia Test coach, marking the third change in two years, as Kevin Walters plans to leave after the World Cup for a role in the Super League.
St Helens announced on Friday that Walters signed a three-year contract to become their new coach, starting right after the World Cup.
"St Helens are a huge club in world rugby league, but also in the United Kingdom, they've been one of the most successful clubs in their history," Walters shared on Triple M. "I'm very excited about the opportunity."
This situation places officials in search of a new Kangaroos coach, as Walters only took over from Mal Meninga last year when Meninga moved to the Perth Bears.
The ARL Commission has a guideline that prevents coaches from managing NRL teams while also coaching the Kangaroos, a rule likely applicable to Super League as well.
Ivan Cleary, a coach with four NRL premiership titles, appears to be a strong candidate, showing interest in representative coaching and likely finishing with Penrith before Australia's next match.
Last season, Brad Fittler was a contender to take Meninga's spot but stepped back due to the short lead time before the Ashes and the challenges of balancing media duties.
Billy Slater has the potential to emerge as a candidate after his recent decision to step down as Queensland State of Origin coach, though it's a long shot given his recent exit from the Queensland role.
Cameron Smith was considered for the Queensland position but ruled himself out, preferring not to commit to a head coaching role.
Initially brought on for a short-term position last year when Meninga was appointed, Walters received a longer contract in May.
His announcement to depart comes less than two months before Australia's tournament opener against New Zealand on October 15.
After the World Cup, the Kangaroos will not compete again until the end of 2027, giving the commission plenty of time to secure a new coach.
Since Paul Rowley's departure last month, St Helens has been seeking a new coach, currently sitting seventh, just two wins away from a finals spot with four games remaining.
McManus expressed gratitude toward Peter V'Landys and the ARL Commission for facilitating Walters's transition.
"Kevin's vast experience at both club and representative levels is self-evident," he remarked.
"His motivation to succeed with the task at hand was both clear and compelling to us, as shown by the major career sacrifices that he is making in Australia to join St Helens.
"This is a major statement of ambition both by St Helens and by Super League."
