Coach confusion: Hip-drop penalties leave rugby league puzzled

‘Eye for an eye’: Coach confusion over hip-drop

Ivan Cleary and other NRL coaches have expressed confusion and frustration over the interpretation of the hip-drop tackle rule in the league.

Cleary stated that the rule has changed so much that "the hip drop isn't a hip drop anymore," echoing sentiments shared by fellow coaches Wayne Bennett and Benji Marshall.

Players have been penalised for tackles that don't appear overly concerning, leading to questions about the consistency and clarity of the rule.

The confusion was highlighted by incidents like Tigers forward Samuela Fainu being penalised but not charged for a tackle that led to three quick tries for the Eels, and Panthers hooker Mitch Kenny being suspended for two matches.

Roosters coach Trent Robinson was shocked that no action was taken on the field for a tackle that caused a serious knee injury to one of his players.

Cleary emphasized that players don't intentionally set out to harm their opponents, and that the fast pace of the game can make split-second decisions difficult.

The Panthers considered challenging Kenny's suspension but ultimately decided to take the guilty plea.

The ongoing debate surrounding the hip-drop tackle rule reflects the challenges faced by coaches, players, and officials in ensuring player safety while maintaining the integrity and excitement of the game.
