Coach Attitude Sparks Cowboys' Revival

Cowboys Star Discusses Coach Todd Payten's Transformation in 2026

Jaxon Purdue, a standout for the North Queensland Cowboys, has highlighted a significant shift in coach Todd Payten's approach, which has contributed to the club's recent improvement.

With his contract ending this year, Purdue has been performing exceptionally well in the centres, showcasing his skills over the last two weeks.

Following a rough start with consecutive losses, the Cowboys have bounced back, achieving consecutive victories against both the Gold Coast Titans and Melbourne Storm.

The victory against the Storm, especially, has alleviated some of the pressure on Payten, who was previously facing scrutiny regarding his future with the team.

Purdue attributes the team's resurgence to Payten's more composed demeanor, stating that it's been crucial for the club's morale.

"I think he's been really awesome this year," he mentioned on SEN'S Vossy's Verdict.

"He's come into this year with a whole different attitude.

"I really think that he did mean that he doesn't really look at the media or anything like that cause he's been really good with the boys and really good with the playing group, about staying calm and collective and just sticking together.

"I guess getting through all the tough stuff by doing it together. That's the only way out of it."
