Daly Cherry-Evans is poised to extend his playing career through an option in his contract with the Sydney Roosters, potentially keeping him in first-grade rugby until 2027.
Initially signed from the Manly Sea Eagles at the beginning of this season, Cherry-Evans spent his entire career with the Maroons.
This season was expected to be a likely farewell, where he would mentor the Roosters' young halves and deliver experience and stability, before transitioning into a coaching role.
However, the veteran halfback had an option for 2027 in his contract, which Fantatics TV reports has been activated, confirming that he will continue to play.
"Daly Cherry-Evans at the Sydney Roosters, the mail kicking around at the moment is that he will be playing on next season," stated journalist James Hooper on the Rugby League Insider show.
This decision secures Cherry-Evans a 17th year in the NRL, as the 37-year-old aims for the milestone of 400 games, depending on his fitness and the Roosters' potential finals appearance.
Currently, he has played 369 NRL games, with seven remaining this season along with potential finals, and up to 24 in the next season.
While retirement is likely at the end of 2027, his continued presence raises questions about the young halves the Roosters will be able to keep.
Sam Walker is off-contract at the end of 2027 and seems likely to stay, especially after his Origin performance and subsequent negotiations, but the future of promising talents Hugo Savala and Toby Rodwell remains uncertain.
