The Newcastle Knights have disclosed that calf tightness is the reason Dane Gagai will not be in the lineup for this weekend's significant matchup against the Sydney Roosters.
Gagai, who is set to join the Brisbane Broncos at the end of the season, has been an integral part of Justin Holbrook's roster during an impressive campaign in Hunter territory.
As the Knights aim for a final series spot, last weekend's loss to the Cronulla Sharks has heightened the urgency for a victory against the Roosters this week to maintain hopes for a top-four finish and a potential home elimination final.
Unfortunately for the Knights, Gagai's absence means Fletcher Hunt will step into the centre position.
On a positive note, it appears Gagai may only be sidelined for one week, with plans to return next weekend for a match against the Brisbane Broncos at Suncorp Stadium.
Hunt, who was on the bench last week, has gained experience playing various positions in the backline for Newcastle this year. However, he faces a challenging task as he tries to contain Queensland Maroons State of Origin star Robert Toia on the edge for the Roosters.
The Knights have enlisted Cody Hopwood as a fresh face on the bench, while they may still bring back Kyle McCarthy and Connor Votano from the reserves for coach Holbrook.
Newcastle has a bye in the final round of the season but will face the Roosters, Broncos, Raiders, Titans, Sea Eagles, and Warriors in the closing stretch, likely needing just one or two wins for a top-eight spot. However, maintaining an undefeated streak could secure them a chance at making the top four.
