Canterbury faced a significant setback during their 32-24 NRL loss to South Sydney, as captain Stephen Crichton could not complete the game due to a shoulder injury.
The injury occurred in the 43rd minute when Crichton awkwardly landed during a tackle involving Rabbitohs players Campbell Graham and Jack Wighton, and he did not return to the game on Friday.
At the moment Crichton exited the field at Accor Stadium, the Bulldogs were ahead 18-12, putting his availability for the upcoming match against Penrith next Thursday in serious jeopardy.
Coach Cameron Ciraldo opted not to insert disgruntled centre Bronson Xerri as a direct replacement for Crichton, instead shifting five-eighth Matt Burton to centre and integrating Sean O'Sullivan into the halves.
Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, this tactical change disrupted their offensive rhythm, allowing Souths to score 20 points in the second half, marking their third victory in the first four games of the season.
Latrell Mitchell was a standout performer, scoring two tries and successfully kicking six goals, finishing the game at fullback after Jye Gray sustained a head injury and was assessed.
The match began with an early advantage for Souths as Alex Johnston intercepted a pass from Connor Tracey, sprinting 90 meters to register his 215th NRL try just five minutes in.
Canterbury responded through Marcelo Montoya before Mitchell capitalized on a Cody Walker chip-kick, scoring in the in-goal.
Although Mitchell missed a conversion from the left side, he did secure a penalty 12 minutes prior to halftime, extending the lead by six points.
