Bradman Best faces Kangaroos selection squeeze

Bradman Best could miss remainder of NRL season in massive new blow for Newcastle Knights

Reece Walsh expects James Tedesco to have the advantage in Australia's fullback selection after Tedesco's NRL grand final performances.

Walsh, who had a disappointing Broncos season but played in Australia's 3-0 Ashes series win last year, said, "It's hard to compete with Clive," ahead of the World Cup opener against New Zealand.

"I'm obviously grateful to be in camp. I was watching Teddy when I was a kid, so to see what he's done over the last few weeks, it's going to be hard for myself to push for a position."

"But I'm confident in my ability and I can't wait to be a sponge and learn off him. He's one of the greats to do it in the game and I'm lucky enough to rub shoulders as a teammate."

At centre, Bradman Best's form has put his starting place in doubt despite his selection by coach Kevin Walters.

Best helped Newcastle reach the NRL grand final and played a key part in NSW's State of Origin decider victory.

Latrell Mitchell could take the left-centre spot, while Broncos centre Kotoni Staggs may be favoured on the right, leaving Best out.

"Bradman Best is obviously left centre, Latrell is left centre…Latrell left, right centre is either Staggs…it's got to be Staggs at this stage," Chad Townsend said on his show.

Josh Morris agreed, while Townsend said Mitchell was an automatic choice when fit.

Mitchell started the NRL season strongly but was hampered by injuries and played only 190 minutes after Round 11, despite completing 80 minutes in each of South Sydney's final two games.

Staggs played right centre in the previous Ashes series and is in Walters' squad, while Walsh could also start if the coach sticks with that successful side.
