Darius Boyd has been appointed as Queensland's new State of Origin head coach, taking over from Billy Slater, who stepped down following the team's defeat in this year's series. Boyd's two-year deal extends to 2027 and marks a significant step in his career, despite lacking formal NRL head coaching experience.
During his illustrious playing career, Boyd represented the Maroons 28 times and enjoyed a successful 337-game stint in the NRL. Previously, he coached Queensland's U/19s to consecutive series victories and was part of Kevin Walters' coaching staff at the Broncos.
As Boyd embarks on this new chapter, he plans to lean on the expertise of Wayne Bennett, his long-time mentor. The seasoned coach, who has led the Maroons to five series victories, is regarded as the "super coach" by Boyd. Boyd expressed, "I would be silly not to get his advice on things."
Bennett, who is currently focused on his role with South Sydney, recently confirmed he wouldn't seek the head coach position for Queensland, although he offered assistance if needed. He noted the immense pressure that comes with such a role.
QRL chairman Brian Canavan acknowledged Boyd's capabilities, highlighting that he possesses more experience than Slater did at the start of his tenure. Boyd aims to build on the strong legacy established by previous Maroons players and coaches. He intends to instill the same psychological preparation that Mal Meninga demonstrated during his time as head coach, recognizing the challenges of performing at the highest level.
