Bears Perth, a social club for gay men established in 1997, has issued a notice clarifying that they are not associated with the newly formed NRL team, the Perth Bears.
The club is urging interstate rugby league fans not to sign up if they are looking to join the rugby team.
President Kingsley Dawes explained to Sydney's 2GB radio that they have been overwhelmed with membership applications from people outside Western Australia due to this misunderstanding.
The confusion has been compounded by the location of the Bears Perth clubhouse, which is adjacent to HBF Park, a major sporting venue.
Mr.
Dawes described the situation as "a bit weird," noting that the club rarely receives membership inquiries from out of state.
They had to reach out to about 20 applicants to clarify, stating, "You do realise we are not the rugby club."
