Australia's Tedesco returns amid Walsh challenge

James Tedesco and Reece Walsh.

Fiji beat the Cook Islands 40-12 on Sunday before facing Australia in Brisbane.

James Tedesco will make his first Test appearance since 2023 after Reece Walsh was preferred for Australia's opener against New Zealand.

Since his last Test, Tedesco has regained his NSW jersey, won last year's Dally M and claimed the Clive Churchill Medal as Roosters captain earlier this month.

Walsh scored a long-range try and made a try-saving tackle on Kalyn Ponga in Australia's two-point win after returning from injury.

His performance leaves coach Kevin Walters with a major selection call late in the tournament.

"Those big moments; he hadn't played in six, seven weeks but he turned up in big moments and nailed them," Tedesco said of Walsh.

Tedesco, 33, is the squad's oldest player.

"I'm not seeing it like that, it's just my opportunity and I don't know whether it's going to be the last," Tedesco said.

Australia is set to pair Sam Walker with Tom Dearden in the halves, while Cam Munster is expected to rest and Mitchell Moses is out with a calf injury.

Moses's absence could help Walsh, whose long kicking game is not a strength Tedesco offers.
