Australia's Jillaroos face halves dilemma

Jess Sergis.

Jesse Southwell scored a record 44 points as Australia demolished Wales 124-6 in the women's international game's biggest-ever victory.

The result eclipsed France's 116-0 win over Serbia in 2023 and sent the Jillaroos into a semi-final against Fiji next Sunday at Allianz Stadium.

Southwell landed 20 of 21 conversion attempts and scored a try, in her first halves partnership with Taryn Aiken.

Jocelyn Kelleher was rested for the final group match, leaving coach Jess Skinner with a selection decision ahead of the semi-final.

Skinner praised the team's display, saying, "The girls played great."

She added, "I thought that Wales came out firing to start with, and I know they're building as well, so the girls did really well today."

Winger Jaime Chapman scored six tries, matching the Jillaroos' single-game record, while Jess Sergis crossed four times.

Chapman and Sergis each ran for more metres than the entire Welsh team.

Australia led 60-0 at halftime after Olivia Kernick opened the scoring and Chapman added two tries.

Wales scored in the 59th minute through Paige Travis, set up by Tayla Preston, recording the first points conceded by Australia this tournament.

Skinner said Southwell and Aiken had worked well together, adding, "We've got talent across the park in all positions".
