Australia's fullback dilemma: Tedesco or Walsh

Australia will meet either Samoa or Tonga in the Rugby League World Cup semi-finals in Sydney on Sunday 8 November.

Before that, Kevin Walters must choose a fullback for the Cook Islands match, with James Tedesco and Reece Walsh both in form.

Tedesco starred in Australia's 36-22 win over Fiji in Brisbane, a week after Walsh stood out against New Zealand.

Against Fiji, Tedesco recorded 146 run metres, five tackle busts, three line-break assists and four try assists.

His display continued the form he showed in the 2026 NRL Grand Final victory over Newcastle earlier this month.

Walters praised Tedesco's influence after Australia's Week 2 match.

"That's what you expect from this guy," Walters said.

"He's been doing it for a long time and he was one of the differences out there... he's a world-class player."

Walters did not reveal who would wear the No. 1 jersey, but said having two outstanding options was a positive.

"I wouldn't call it a headache because it's a great situation to be in, to have two of the best fullbacks in the game available for us," Walters said.

"I thought Reece was one of the best players in game one and James was tonight one of the best players as well.

"They both just keep producing so we'll have a chat and have some decisions made for next week... it's a good position to be in."
