Australia's fullback battle remains open

Reece Walsh, Tom Trbojevic and Kotoni Staggs.

Australia's right edge came under pressure in its 36-22 Rugby League World Cup win over Fiji, raising questions about Tom Trbojevic and Kotoni Staggs as a defensive pairing.

Trbojevic scored a hat-trick, but Fiji's Semi Valemei crossed three times against him, while Kurt Donoghoe and his teammates repeatedly troubled the Kangaroos' right side.

James Tedesco delivered three try assists, five tackle-breaks and a line-break, helping Australia survive the scare while Reece Walsh watched from the coach's box.

Walsh had impressed in Australia's opening game against New Zealand, leaving the fullback decision unresolved despite Tedesco's strong display.

"He's been doing it for a long time, and he was one of the differences out there for Australia," coach Kevin Walters said of Tedesco.

Walters said having both players available was "a great situation to be in (with Walsh)" and added they would discuss selections for the following week.

Latrell Mitchell, who generally plays on the left, could be considered for Staggs' place on the right, while Tedesco could move to the wing when Walsh plays fullback.

Sam Walker also strengthened his case in the halves, outpointing Tom Dearden and appearing likely to partner Cameron Munster in major games.

Channel 7's Peter Badel said: "I thought Tom Dearden was disappointing, a bit clunky."

He added: "I just thought Sam Walker had better moments. I think Sam Walker on some of his touches tonight has done enough for the No.7 jumper."
