Australia back Staggs as Mitchell waits

Latrell Mitchell will begin Australia's World Cup semi-final against Samoa on the bench, despite coach Kevin Walters calling him a potential match-winner.

Mitchell has missed the past two games, with Bradman Best preferred at left centre. Kotoni Staggs has played right centre in all three of Australia's group-stage wins.

Walters backed Staggs to perform at Allianz Stadium on Sunday, while saying his position could depend on how the match unfolds.

"I expect Kotoni to be really strong and great," Walters said on Saturday.

"I've been really happy with him, with his progress, and I'm sure we'll see the best version of Kotoni Staggs tomorrow night."

Walters said Mitchell's ability made him an important option for the knockout match.

"Well, he (Mitchell) is a match-winner, isn't he?" the Kangaroos coach said.

"I felt it was imperative that we put him at least on the bench."

Mitchell will share the interchange with Sam Walker and Ethan Strange. James Tedesco drops to the reserves after Reece Walsh retained the No.1 jersey.

Walters said Tedesco could return if Australia beats Samoa, but confirmed Walsh would start on Sunday.

"But parked in the garage, we've got James Tedesco weekly, could be as damaging as what Reece is," Walters said.
