Blake Austin shocked many when he turned down a lucrative contract extension at the Canberra Raiders in 2018.
He instead chose a less rewarding deal at Parramatta before ultimately finding success in the English Super League.
Austin revealed that personal dissatisfaction and mental toll were behind his decision to walk away from the Canberra offer.
Speaking with Fox, Austin explained, "I knocked back an extension.
I got offered a two-year extension to stick around on money that was really good money, a lot more money than I was going to get anywhere else at that point." Despite the financial security offered by the Raiders, Austin felt that his happiness and fulfillment were more important in the long run.
The decision to leave Canberra was not easy for Austin, as he had been a key player for the team and was considered a marquee player.
However, he knew that he needed to prioritize his mental well-being and overall satisfaction.
"I wasn't happy there," he admitted.
"I just knew that if I was going to be a professional footballer, I had to find joy, I had to find happiness and know that it wasn't all about the money."
Ultimately, Austin's gamble paid off as he found success and fulfillment playing in the English Super League.
He described this new chapter in his career as the most fulfilling, highlighting the importance of being happy and content in his professional life.
Austin's story serves as a reminder that success is not solely measured by financial gain, but also by personal happiness and satisfaction.
By prioritizing his well-being and happiness, Austin was able to find success in a new setting, showcasing the importance of mental health in the world of professional sports.
