Teig Wilton's defensive prowess has emerged as a pivotal element for Cronulla Sharks as they navigate the 2026 NRL finals series.
In the recent elimination final against North Queensland, Wilton led the Sharks with an impressive 42 tackles, surpassing teammate Blayke Brailey's 38.
"Brails is always punching above his weight in the middle there so it was nice to get one up on him," Wilton expressed to AAP.
Notably, many of Wilton's tackles were aimed at protecting Braydon Trindall, who returned after dislocating his shoulder four weeks ago.
Trindall's performance was closely watched, as he exhibited signs of discomfort, occasionally shaking his right arm.
"It wasn't too much different for me tonight. 'Tricky' is in pretty good shape so you could see he's still a strong defender," noted Wilton.
Wilton recognized Trindall's capabilities, stating, "I've just got to do my job - I'm not worried about him being able to hold his own because I know he can."
Cronulla coach Craig Fitzgibbon highlighted Wilton's importance, especially as opponents target the returning Trindall.
"They tried - the first set they went down that channel three times in that set," Fitzgibbon remarked.
With their eyes set on facing the Sydney Roosters next, Wilton reflected on their solid performance against the Cowboys.
"Overall happy with a gritty win. We felt them coming in the end so we're happy we kept showing up for each other," he concluded.
