The NRL's head of football, Graham Annesley, emphasized that the league will not relent on its strict head high contact policy during Magic Round, despite fan outrage.
He acknowledged that the bunker should only intervene in serious incidents, following significant backlash over several occurrences in the last round.
The issue of high contact has sparked widespread debate after round eight saw 18 players sent to the sin bin, with some facing fines or suspensions, while others escaped without charges.
While fans generally accept penalties or post-game reporting for high contact, frustration has mounted regarding the bunker's involvement in stopping play to sanction players for seemingly minor offenses.
Annesley clarified the league's stance, stating, "From the perspective, there hasn't been a crackdown," referencing a memo sent to clubs after several missed sin bins in round four.
He reaffirmed the NRL's commitment to upholding the expected standards for tackling, which has been in place for three years, reminding stakeholders of the importance of consistency in officiating.
