South Sydney Rabbitohs recruit Jack Wighton has been handed a three-match ban after being found guilty of biting Newcastle's Tyson Gamble during their elimination final.

The incident occurred in the 47th minute of the match when Gamble complained to referee Ashley Klein about being bitten.

Wighton, who pleaded not guilty, maintained his innocence throughout the hearing.

However, Klein's report stated that while he saw a mark and saliva, he couldn't confirm a bite.

This biting controversy is not the first of the year, with Broncos winger Ash Werner and Gold Coast's Kevin Proctor both facing suspensions for similar incidents.

The main difference in this case was that Gamble did not provide evidence, unlike Roosters star Jayme Fressard, who testified and presented photos of the scabbing on her arm in a previous biting case.
