Benji Marshall reportedly acknowledged that Jarome Luai's signing announcement affected the Wests Tigers, despite earlier claims it would not disrupt the team.
Andrew Voss, who co-hosted the club's presentation night, said Marshall described the group as "disconnected" and acknowledged "quite obviously tension" within the professional workplace.
Luai announced he had signed with the Chiefs for 2028 while the Tigers were third on the NRL ladder. They later finished 15th, recording eight victories and 16 defeats.
The halfback also missed the awards ceremony while in Samoa handling promotional work and World Cup planning. Former Tigers players criticised his absence, particularly because he had served as co-captain.
Alex Twal, who received the Kelly-Barnes Medal as the club's male player of the year, told SEN the signing had affected the playing group.
"Throughout the season we try to push things to the side and just focus on winning games and keep the harmony," Twal said. "But the Jarome thing was a bit of a distraction."
He also cited injuries to senior players, declining confidence and a loss of form. Twal said Luai's attendance "would have been good", adding, "It's a bit disappointing but it is what it is."
Steve 'Blocker' Roach urged the Tigers to fine Luai, while Joel Caine and Braith Anasta said the absence reflected poorly on him.
