Wests Tigers seek leadership from Frizell

Wests Tigers sign Tyson Frizell for 2027

After finishing 15th in 2026, Wests Tigers have signed Tyson Frizell on a one-year deal for 2027, adding an experienced forward to Benji Marshall's squad.

Marshall said Frizell's preparation would set an example for younger players.

"Tyson is the most professional player I've ever seen when it comes to preparation,'' Marshall said in a statement.

"To play the amount of footy he has and still compete at the highest level of the game at his age is a credit to the way he prepares and goes about his business.

"Tyson will be invaluable in terms of the leadership he will bring to the younger guys. He will show people here what first grade preparation looks like week in, week out. Tyson doesn't miss a beat when it comes to that kind of stuff."

The 35-year-old will leave Newcastle at season's end, with the Knights' emerging forwards making a spot for him harder to secure.

Frizell played 25 NRL games for Newcastle this season and stepped up amid injuries to the forward pack, playing at least 40 minutes in the closing rounds.

The Knights reached the grand final but lost 19-18 to the Roosters.

Frizell has also represented the Sharks, Dragons, NSW Blues and Australia, and has been selected for Tonga at the Rugby League World Cup.

His signing follows the Tigers' recruitment of Kurt Mann. The club began the season strongly before off-field drama derailed its campaign.
