In a recent episode of The Bench podcast, St Helens CEO Mike Rush expressed his support for head coach Paul Wellens, stating that "he's not become a poor coach" despite facing challenges this season.
Rush emphasized that Wellens "needs time" to succeed, especially amid high expectations for the club to compete actively in every game.
Although St Helens had a rough start to the Super League season, they managed two significant wins against Catalans and Huddersfield, winning 40-0 and 46-4 respectively.
However, they currently sit fifth in the league, suggesting tougher challenges ahead.
Rush acknowledged the club's expectations, saying, "I understand the expectation of this club, and that's what it comes back to.
The expectation is that we compete for everything, and we need to be in everything and in the big games." He reiterated the importance of giving Wellens and his staff the necessary time to improve the team's performance.
Overall, Rush's remarks highlight his confidence in Wellens' coaching abilities and the need for patience as the team navigates a transitional period.
