Kevin Walters has shared an update regarding his role as head coach of the Australian Kangaroos as the nation gears up for the 2026 Rugby League World Cup (RLWC).

Walters, who stepped in as Mal Meninga's successor, initially signed a three-match contract with Australia after his unexpected departure from the Brisbane Broncos at the end of the 2024 NRL season.

Following a successful tenure leading the Kangaroos to a clean sweep victory over England in the 2025 Ashes Series, Walters is eager to continue guiding the national team through the upcoming RLWC, aiming for yet another championship.

In a conversation with The Sydney Morning Herald, Walters revealed that he has not yet initiated discussions with ARLC Chairman Peter V'landys and NRL CEO Andrew Abdo regarding a contract extension, although he expresses a desire to maintain his coaching position.

"Obviously, I want to continue on coaching Australia, it's been a great initiation into the international arena, and next year with the World Cup here in Australia it makes a lot of sense," he stated, reflecting on his journey.

"But we'll get through Christmas, enjoy that, and look forward to an even better 2026," he added, emphasizing his optimism for the upcoming year.

Additionally, Walters highlighted the significance of building strong relationships with the players: "I feel the most important thing is getting a really good relationship with players, and letting them be the people they want to be, and let them express themselves in a way they want to play."
