Kevin Walters, recently appointed as coach of the Kangaroos, faces the challenge of convincing star players Payne Haas, Tino Fa'asuamaleaui, and Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow to represent Australia rather than Samoa.
Since being named to lead the Kangaroos in the upcoming Ashes series in England, Walters has learned that these Origin superstars are inclined to switch their allegiances due to the growing trend among players with Pacific Island backgrounds to honor family heritage.
Reports suggest that Haas, Fa'asuamaleaui, and Tabuai-Fidow are considering playing for Samoa in the post-season Pacific Championships.
Their decision could significantly impact the roster for next year's World Cup in Australia and Papua New Guinea.
If they ultimately choose to represent Samoa, they would join other notable players like Jarome Luai and Stephen Crichton, further strengthening the Samoan team.
Walters recognizes the importance of family ties for many players and would fully support their decisions if they opt for Samoa.
However, he is eager to engage with the trio to highlight the opportunity of playing for the Kangaroos and is hopeful they will consider it seriously.
"In time I will, but that's probably not a conversation for today," Walters stated regarding discussions with the players.
"I just want to explain to those players that are contemplating, I totally understand their situation, but let's get the Kangaroos opportunity in front of them and see where they're at with that.
We move forward from there."
