New Kangaroos coach Kevin Walters has expressed enthusiasm regarding the possibility of selecting injured South Sydney Rabbitohs captain, Cameron Murray, for the upcoming Ashes tour, contingent on his return to play before the NRL season concludes. The Rabbitohs have faced significant injuries throughout 2025, impacting many key players.

Murray suffered a ruptured Achilles during pre-season training, resulting in a long layoff for most of South Sydney's campaign. However, he has been diligently working to return before the season ends.

Coach Wayne Bennett has commended Murray's commitment, stating that he supports Murray's desire to return to the field. "If it's important for Cam to play a couple of games at the end of the season, he can do that - I won't spoil it for him," Bennett shared after a match against Cronulla. He acknowledged the likelihood of Murray playing again this season, praising the player's remarkable recovery efforts. "He's done a remarkable job with his recovery.... I'll do what he wants to do. He's worked so hard to be a part of the team again," Bennett added.

Murray's return would not only aim to help the Rabbitohs avoid a wooden spoon but also position him to compete for a spot on the Australian national team. He has been instrumental for both his state and the country in recent years, even starting over NSW captain Isaah Yeo in the 2024 State of Origin series victory.

Murray has represented Australia 10 times, scoring seven tries, solidifying his place in the international arena. Moreover, Walters admitted Murray would come into the selection discussion if he returns to the field. The coach could consider moving Isaah Yeo into the middle to compensate for Australia's shortfall against England, allowing Murray to take on a lock position. On Triple M, Walters mentioned that he would need to see Murray demonstrate his fitness to potentially secure a place in the 22-man squad.
