Walsh sharpens Australia's fullback dilemma

Mitchell Moses' fitness is a concern for Australia after the Kangaroos edged New Zealand 24-22 in their World Cup opener.

The Parramatta halfback, Australia's strongest last-tackle kicker in Nathan Cleary's absence, did not finish the match.

Coach Kevin Walters said Ethan Strange was on standby. "If he (Moses) is ruled out for the tournament we can bring Ethan in so we'll just see how that goes the next couple of days," Walters said.

Reece Walsh also made a strong case for the No.1 jersey, scoring a 70-metre try after beating four defenders, including Kalyn Ponga.

The Brisbane fullback had earlier stopped Ponga with a try-saving tackle. He was playing his first game since an ankle injury and vomited repeatedly after his long run, leaving Latrell Mitchell to take over goalkicking.

"Two pieces of toast (for a pre-game dinner) will do that for you," Walsh said.

He said he had been throwing up during games since he was 12, adding: "Once I start doing that, it's game over."

Walters called Walsh a "chucker" and said James Tedesco and Sam Walker were likely to play against Fiji in Brisbane next week.

The contest between Walsh and Tedesco, a former World Cup-winning captain and Clive Churchill medallist, has been a major selection question.

Tedesco told Walsh, "Whatever you need to prepare for the week, and I can help you with, I'll do". Walsh said his support had been "massive" and he looked forward to Tedesco's opportunity.
