V'landys targets 22-team NRL expansion

NRL revenue reached $845.6 million this year, with more than $900 million forecast next year.

It could exceed $1 billion in 2028, when a $5.3 billion broadcast deal begins.

The growth follows reports that the game was two weeks from insolvency during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Peter V'landys says the league could grow to 22 teams in the broadcast cycle beginning in 2035.

The Perth Bears join in 2027 and the PNG Chiefs in 2028; a 21st club is scheduled for 2029.

An announcement is expected before Christmas, with Ipswich Jets and New Zealand's Southern Orcas among the leading contenders.

V'landys also wants to reshape the schedule and secure $57 million for England's Super League.

He became executive chairman two weeks ago after Andrew Abdo left for Tennis Australia.

Combining V'landys's former post with Abdo's role raised concerns about concentrated power, although clubs unanimously backed the appointment, V'landys said.

"I wouldn't have taken this role on without the support of the clubs," V'landys said.
