Tonga's Frizell eyes grandfather tribute

AFB & Sione ready to ride the Red Wave for Mate Ma'a Tonga

A third World Cup, this time in Tonga's colours, offers Tyson Frizell a chance to honour his late grandfather.

Selected for Tonga's 2026 Rugby League World Cup squad, Frizell will represent his third nation at the tournament.

With a Welsh father and Tongan mother, he played for Wales in 2013 and joined Australia's victorious Kangaroos squad in 2017.

He represented Tonga on its 2023 tour of England.

The squad includes forwards Jason Taumalolo, Haumole Olakau'atu and Addin Fonua-Blake, with Isaiya Katoa at halfback.

Frizell moved into Newcastle's middle, whose inexperienced grand final pack had fewer combined NRL games than his 306 appearances.

He injured his ribs in the preliminary-final win over Penrith, and his grandfather died in the week before the grand final.

Frizell played 40 minutes in the front row as Newcastle lost 19-18 to the Sydney Roosters. He says he will be fit for Tonga's campaign.

"Obviously the Tongan side is very special to me, and it would mean a lot to be able to represent my grandfather."

"He passed away last week so it's been a bit tough. His nickname was 'Captain' and he used to say he was the first Tongan in Wollongong."

Frizell's grandfather saw him play for Australia against Tonga in 2018, but never watched him wear Tonga's jersey.

"I've played for Tonga before but I did that over in England so hopefully my family will be able to watch me this time," he said.
