Thurston vs Leniu: Clash of the Titans Await

Spencer Leniu on fresh collision course with Johnathan Thurston after State of Origin reveal

New South Wales coach Laurie Daley is poised to select controversial Roosters forward Spencer Leniu for State of Origin Game 1, rekindling a competitive dynamic with Queensland legend Johnathan Thurston.

Leniu, known for his aggressive play and powerful runs, has been a divisive figure in rugby league, frequently making headlines.

Leniu was a significant asset for the Roosters and contributed to NSW's success in the previous Origin series, where he was selected by then-coach Michael Maguire.

The Blues won that series 2-1, with Leniu demonstrating his aggressive style of play.

However, in 2025, he has struggled with consistency, starting four games at prop due to injuries and coming off the bench three times.

Despite only exceeding 100 running meters twice this year, his energy as a substitute has been beneficial.

According to The Daily Telegraph, Leniu is slated for a bench role in the upcoming game at Suncorp, with Payne Haas expected to start at prop.

This leaves open two additional front-row positions in Daley's lineup.

NSW great Greg Alexander has indicated that Leniu is likely to join Haas and last year's prop Mitchell Barnett, which could put Terrell May of the Wests Tigers in a tough competition for a spot on the team.

Leniu's selection is anticipated to inject ferocity into the match, drawing fans' attention and potentially making him a target.

This matchup will place him on a direct collision course with Thurston, intensifying the rivalry in the highly anticipated game.
