Nathan Cleary's season-ending injury has opened Australia's halfback contest to Sam Walker and Mitchell Moses, with Tom Dearden also in contention.
Dearden co-captained North Queensland and impressed for Queensland in the 2024 series win; he has played six Tests in recent years.
Walker returned from an ankle injury to star against the Dolphins in the preliminary final, helping the Roosters reach the grand final against Newcastle.
He is now 80 minutes from a possible World Cup selection.
Australia coach Kevin Walters said he weighs representative history, Origin form and finals performances equally.
"Sam's name will be brought up in the selection meetings for sure. We thought he was eliminated, but with his re-emergence he has put himself back in the picture," Walters told AAP.
Walker made an impressive Origin debut and was man of the match in game two of NSW's 2-1 series win.
"There is a bit of competition with Mitch Moses, but Sam has played the footy this year that shows he is ready to play for Australia," former Test half Greg Alexander told AAP.
Alexander also praised Walker's defence: "Sam is a smaller player, but his defence has been very good," he said.
