Sydney Roosters' Tupou nears 200 tries

Tupou on verge of history in NRL decider

At 35, Daniel Tupou has yet to sign for next season, but the Sydney Roosters expect him to play on.

He has put contract discussions aside until the finals end.

"I've put it on pause for now, during this final series," Tupou said. "So, once it's done, then I'll sort it out."

His immediate focus is Sunday night's grand final against Newcastle, where he could become the third player to score 200 tries in the game's 119-year history.

Tupou enters the match with 198 tries for the Roosters, behind Alex Johnston's 240 and Ken Irvine's 212. Billy Slater scored 190, while Steve Menzies finished with 180.

"Wow," Tupou responded when told of the milestone. "But you know what? I'm just, grateful I'm playing. And look, if that happens, that's an ultimate bonus. But I didn't even know until you just said it. I try not to think about it too much. If it happens, it happens. If it doesn't, then it is what it is."

He has delivered on grand-final stages before: scoring in the Roosters' 2013 win over Manly and opening the scoring in their 2018 victory. He also made a major contribution in yardage against Canberra in 2019.

Roosters five-eighth Daly Cherry-Evans, who opposed Tupou in 2013, said: "It's funny, he's always just somehow been in the shadows. Don't ask me why, maybe it's because of his personality. He doesn't necessarily sell papers with his hype, but we wouldn't trade him for anyone."

Cherry-Evans added: "For a winger to play (306) games, score that many tries and to somewhat not be spoken about a lot, I guess that maybe just sums up Toops."
