Sydney Roosters' Toia poses overlooked threat

NRL

Robert Toia's 2026 numbers make the 22-year-old a major threat Newcastle must track in the grand final: 15 tries, 13 try-assists and 18 line breaks.

The Roosters centre has also made 112 tackle breaks and averages 112 running metres per game, with an 89.5 per cent tackle efficiency.

While Newcastle are likely to focus on Mark Nawaqanitawase, Sam Walker and James Tedesco, Toia's impact could be just as decisive.

His connection with winger Nawaqanitawase has grown over two seasons, with the pair anticipating each other's movement and combining effectively in attack.

Their understanding was evident in the preliminary final against the Redcliffe Dolphins, and Newcastle will need to contain them throughout the match.

Nawaqanitawase is regarded as one of the competition's best wingers, despite being overlooked at Wednesday evening's Dally M Medal ceremony.

Toia has also shown he can deliver in major games. He scored a try, provided an assist and made eight tackle breaks in the Roosters' 46-10 semi-final win over Cronulla.

This year, the Queensland debutant also established himself as a consistent option for the Maroons during the State of Origin series.
