A possible swap involving North Queensland halfback Tom Dearden is among the options being discussed for Sam Walker's early departure from the Sydney Roosters.
The 24-year-old is contracted through the end of 2027 and is expected to honour that deal, though his long-term future remains unsettled.
The Sydney Morning Herald reported that the Roosters withdrew a proposed three-year, $4.2 million extension after Walker's management sought improved terms.
Chairman Nick Politis was understood to have told the recruitment department to withdraw the offer, which would have been the richest in club history.
Sources told the newspaper Walker ranked behind James Tedesco, Mark Nawaqanitawase, Robert Toia and Naufahu Whyte in the club's talent pecking order.
The decision emerged on Monday night, and Walker and coach Trent Robinson are understood not to have spoken since.
Walker was also omitted from Australia's final World Cup group game against the Cook Islands, with Kevin Walters selecting Cameron Munster and Dearden in the halves.
Ethan Strange was named on the bench as a potential debutant.
After his required post-World Cup rest, Walker is expected back at Bondi for pre-season training in late December or early January.
The Roosters have not ruled out an immediate exit but are reportedly unwilling to cover a significant part of his contract, while rival clubs face salary-cap difficulties.
Unless negotiations resume, 2027 could be Walker's final season at the club; Hugo Savala and Toby Rodwell are possible replacements if he leaves early.
The 2026 premiership winners may need a new halves combination after Daly Cherry-Evans announced his retirement.
