The Sydney Roosters say Mark Nawaqanitawase will be welcome back in the NRL, while the departing outside back plans to move to Japan next year.
He has floated a possible return by 2029, but says proving himself in rugby union-not money-is driving the move.
"I've had a short time in union, but I still feel like I have a lot more to give and a lot more to prove," Nawaqanitawase said on The Good, The Bad and The Rugby podcast.
He hopes to play at the 2027 Rugby World Cup but has not chosen between Australia, Fiji and Italy.
He is eligible for all three because he will have gone more than three years without playing an international match.
"There is a lot to think about. These decisions have a massive impact on your life," he said.
Travel and new experiences also matter to him: "I'm a big believer in experiences, and you have to enjoy it while you can. It doesn't last for ever."
In two seasons with the Roosters, he won a premiership and represented NSW and Australia; speculation has suggested the club could offer fullback-level pay if he returns.
