Newcastle are targeting a leap from last place in 2025 to first in 2026, a turnaround achieved only once before in NRL or NSWRL history.
The Roosters, meanwhile, enter Sunday night's Grand Final as favourites to claim their first NRL premiership since 2019.
Before the 2026 decider against Newcastle, Sydney coach Trent Robinson made his final media appearance at the team's captain's run at Accor Stadium.
He spoke about Connor Watson's HIA setback, which ruled out the departing veteran from what would have been his final game for the club.
Robinson said the Roosters believed there were grounds to clear Watson but accepted the decision under the 11-day stand-down policy.
"We all believe in the 11-day stand down policy… we thought there were grounds there (for Watson to be cleared to play), but we respect the decision. Ultimately it came down to protocols and we stand by that," he said.
Robinson described Watson's response as stoic and said the news was devastating for a player who had worked throughout his career for the opportunity.
"Connor is a good man, a strong man" was Robinson's assessment of Watson, who addressed the team after learning he would miss the match.
Replacement Benaiah Ioelu then spoke about his affection for Watson and what taking his place meant; Robinson said, "that's what teams are about."
Asked about an NFL-style week off before the Grand Final to prevent HIA cases, Robinson opposed the idea.
"I think these are unfortunate things that happen, but we have protocols for reasons," he said.
He would prefer a break before the finals, saying momentum builds through the series and attrition is part of the game.
