Melbourne Storm players have taken an unusual approach to their preparation for their match against Penrith, leaving their opponents bemused.

During training sessions this week, Storm players were seen wearing replica Panthers jerseys, complete with logos and sponsors.

This tactic caught the attention of their preliminary final opponents, who were left scratching their heads and even had a chuckle.

Melbourne has had a tough season against Penrith, losing both encounters by a combined scoreline of 60-22.

As a result, they are considered rank outsiders to upset the Panthers in the grand final qualifier.

While using reserve players as opposition during training is common, Penrith prop Moses Leota found it "weird" to see Storm players charging into black jerseys.

He laughed and commented, "It is funny to see how other teams prepare differently to how we prepare."
