The Melbourne Storm appear to be accepting the likelihood of losing star fullback Ryan Papenhuyzen to rugby union at the conclusion of 2026. Reports indicate that Papenhuyzen's contract expires at the same time the new R360 competition is set to debut, making him a prime candidate for recruitment as discussions about player acquisitions from the NRL intensify.

Papenhuyzen isn't alone in facing interest from the Saudi Arabian-backed rugby competition; teammate Cameron Munster has also attracted attention, joining a list of notable players including Payne Haas and New South Wales State of Origin winger Zac Lomax.

Given the circumstances, Papenhuyzen seems to be among those most likely to make the transition. With Melbourne potentially ready to usher in Sua Fa'alogo as his replacement, journalist Brent Read commented on Fox Sports' NRL 360, suggesting that there's a growing sentiment within the club regarding an immediate release for Papenhuyzen.

"Ryan Papenhuyzen is the other big one, all the talk about R360, if he is going to go to R360 at the end of next year," Read stated. "I think there's a school of thought that maybe if you want to go to rugby, go now... they think he is going to R360 at the end of next year."

Read also expressed concern about Papenhuyzen's performance this season, noting his lack of form. "I don't think Paps has had his best year, I think we can all see that. I think he has looked down all year, I can even say he has looked distracted at times."
