The Melbourne Storm are actively pursuing contract extensions for key players, having recently secured Jahrome Hughes and aiming to finalize agreements with the rest of their spine soon.
One player reportedly close to signing a new deal is Queensland Maroons winger Xavier Coates.
According to the Daily Telegraph, the Storm have initiated talks with Coates, focusing on keeping him beyond the expiration of his current contract in 2026.
The proposed extension would push his contract to the end of 2027, which could potentially align with his interest in joining the new Papua New Guinea side set to join the NRL in 2028.
Given his PNG heritage and connection to the national team, this one-year extension could influence his decision when the opportunity arises.
